Neighborhood
Naturally Occurring Retirement Community is an interfaith partnership led by Jewish Family
Services of NENY, and also includes Senior Services of Albany, Roman Catholic
Diocese of Albany, United Jewish Federation of NENY, St. Peter's Home Care
and CHOICES program, Catholic Charities, St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox
Church, Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center, University at Albany
School of Social Welfare, and College of Saint Rose. NNORC's allow adults
to remain in their homes, and give them opportunities for social
interaction and increased health and social services. With the Baby Boom
generation moving into the 60+ age range, the need for development of supportive
services for older adults wishing to remain in their homes has never been
more timely.
|
As the
first NNORC in the region, we hope this pilot program will serve as a model for other local
communities and neighborhoods. It is our goal to promote innovative, interfaith,
supportive services to seniors who wish to live independently. By
providing access to a range of health and supportive services, we hope to
improve the residents' health, social outcomes and quality of life as
they age in place.

in the NNORC geographic area
The NNORC
area is a southwest section of Albany that has one of the highest concentrations of older
adults in the Capital Region. According to the most recent US census, in
this area of Albany, 27% of the residents are over the age of 60 and 47% of
the households have at least one resident 65 years of age or older. The
boundaries of the area Academy Road/Marwill Street on the east, Whitehall
Road on the south, New Scotland Avenue on the north, and the western border
at the intersection of New Scotland Avenue and Whitehall Road.
Many of
the residents of the single- and two-family homes and garden apartments in
this approximately 2 square mile region have lived in this area for many
years. All of these residents aged 60 and above are eligible to participate
in the NNORC project.
